Spread it thinly

It was a debate between the merits of butter v margarine in terms of a healthy diet. The dairy farmer argued butter was a totally natural product so had to be better for you. His counterpart argued that research had shown that alternatives to butter such as those made with olive oil reduced the risk of heart  disease. The interviewer then turned to the medical spokes person from the campaign on healthy eating and asked which was best for your health. The reply was a master piece in diplomacy and common sense. “ My advice would be which ever you chose to spread on your toast spread it thinly .”

Spread it thinly should be the motto.

If you work in policy or support services all to often you are required to come down in favour of one course of action or another. Giving the red light to zealots of outsourcing or centralisation rather than acknowledging that every course of action has its advantages and disadvantage and which ever is chosen will require action to mitigate against the disadvantages.
