Head Hunters tips

Your application form gets you the interview your interview gets you the job.

The difference between a CV and an application form is that the application form is written specifically for the post applied for so you are required to organise the section headed supporting information so that it directly relates to each requirement listed in the person specification. You stand a much better chance of being short listed if your application form makes it easy for the recruiter to identify the essential requirements. If the recruiter is looking through a lot of application forms they are less willing to spend time and effort trying to find evidence that you meet the PS . So make it explicit even if this makes the prose more clunky.

Your CV /application form should tell your story which you can then expand on in the interview. Your story is how you got to where you are today, who helped you on the way ( team , mentor, inspirational manager) what you have learnt on the way ( success and failures both provide lessons learnt).

It is common practice to start an interview by referring to your CV/application form and asking you to tell the panel a little more about your current post, the project you refer to or the networking group that has recently proved very helpful. They aim is not to catch you out but gently ease you into the interview by getting you to talk about something you feel comfortable and confident about.

Telling your story with relaxed confidence will engage the panel and make your interview all the more memorable.
