Cross border mapping of Wind Turbines

Hello. A grouping of South Pennine Authorities are working together (including signing a Memorandum of Understanding) to try and improve our approaches to consideration of wind turbines, especially cumulative impacts. We are trying to enable sharing of databases and of GIS mapping so we can assess Zones of Visual Impact but this raises some issues of how this is achieved regarding: * Mechanism for data sharing and updating * Size of files * The area of mapping that can be covered regarding OS licences We would be very interested in finding out more about how any other groupings of authorities have dealt with similar issues and if there is any consultancy and funding available to do this cross-regional work as we are are all working with limited resources. Thanks!!

Re: Cross border mapping of Wind Turbines

Hi Adrian, A group of Staffordshire authorities were going to commission a similar piece of work (as a result of a Staffordshire wide renewable energy opportunity study which identified opportunities for wind energy but concluded that cumulative impacts would need to be considered separately) but this has now been expanded to cover landscape characteristics, sensitivity and impacts from large developments - whether this is wind turbines, warehouses, poly tunnels etc. The work has not started yet but it is hoped it will begin in the next couple of months and finished by the end of the year. The aim of the work is really to help with the decision making process for determining these type of applications and also make it clear to the applicant the landscape features of that area which will be considered sensitive. We are fortunate that the 10+ year old county wide landscape SPG was due to be refreshed so have managed to incorporate the work into that. Naomi

Re: Cross border mapping of Wind Turbines

The Department for Business and Innovation have announced a £7.5 million breakthrough fund helping public sector organisations to release open data to overcome technical barriers. The funding opportunity is available to local authorities alongside other public sector organisations. Local authorities are encouraged to submit collaborative bids based on geographic, economic, community of interest, shared services or other local or regional partnership groupings. Further information about the breakthrough fund is available on https://www.gov.uk/data-strategy-board#dsb-breakthrough-fund. Would this help?

Re: Cross border mapping of Wind Turbines

Thanks Naomi and Jennifer-both really useful inputs. A couple of questions: * On the Staffordshire work which authority is co-ordinating this or have you got a consultant to do it? Have you faced any technical issues in sharing your data? * Are any authorities in Berkshire area doing any work on data sharing? Thanks Adrian Smith

Re: Cross border mapping of Wind Turbines

Staffordshire County Council are co-ordinating the project but a consultant will be doing the work. We haven't faced any technical issues yet regarding sharing data - I hope we don't! I think because a large part of the work is a refresh a lot of the data has previously been shared. Naomi

Re: Cross border mapping of Wind Turbines

I wasn't involved in this study, but the East Midlands Councils sought to develop a shared evidence-base for Wind Energy and Heat Mapping Opportunities across the Region. You can view the report here: http://www.emcouncils.gov.uk/Renewable-Energy-Study The Study covers a wide range of factors that determine opportunities and potential material constraints on development. It could build on recent application activity, but does look at existing installations listed under the DECCs statistics. Cheers, Jon
