RE: Electricty Battery Storage

Electricty Battery Storage

Has anyone any experience of dealing with these? - large scale commercial battery storage typically housed in a shipping container, often alongside renewable energy provision.

Being a relatively new technology, there seems to be very little guidance out there on the planning implications of siting these, particularly any health or noise issues from siting near residential development.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

No direct experience I'm afraid but, speaking as an environmentalist and off the top of my head...

- noise would not be my first concern (think there's a case in Flintshire you should look up)

- there will be no emissions obviously so day to day health of local residents would also be a low priority for me. However.....

- the storage container operators should have appropriate fire safety procedures (and health precautions associated with fire). Some information on appropriate working temperatures for the batteries would be useful in this context. What happens on the few very hot summer days we get each year? Is a ventilation system in place?

- effective environmental protection procedures will also be paramount ("in unlikely event of a leak/disassembly/fire etc, local soils, watercourse, sensitive habitats etc will be protected via the following mechanisms..."). The Environment Agency would certainly expect to see something along these lines.

- Perhaps a useful precaution would be to treat them like oil storage containers? e.g. storage on made ground, with appropriate bunds. Manufacturers will be able to guide you on this.

Hope this is helpful or at least might help get you started.

Thank you for the above notice 2017.

British Transport Police is seeking to procure Lithium battery storage 'safes'; to inlcude storage of mobile phone and escooter batteries.

Has anyone had experience of this more recently.

Kind regards
