Standing in the way of progress

Reminds me of the parents who sort careers advice for their son concerned about his ambition to be a racing driver. The response, “Don’t stand in his way”. Silly joke but isn’t this what we are all told, progress is unstoppable.

I am as seduced by technology as the next person as I sit here by the pool writing this on my IPad whist listening to my music played on my phone through my wireless earbuds! But just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.

Once the NASA space program had achieved its objective of putting a man on the moon people began to question whether the mind boggling cost and diversion of resources both physical and intellectual was justified when there were so many other demands on the government closer to home,( poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, crime). And then there is the environmental cost. The program was scaled down.

The message is the future does not have to be driven by technology. What is true of society as a whole is true of organisations.
