Mindfulness and compassion -will be big in 2026

The power of mindfulness , the gains to be made by leading with compassion and the continuing need to be adaptable

What did you get for Christmas? Did you get a book on leadership, perhaps something about a winning team written by or about an all conquering sports team? It’s long been recognised that sport particularly team games offer lessons in leadership that are applicable to business. Teamwork and insights into managing highly talented individuals are obvious crossovers. However the buzz words in organisations in 2026 will be mindfulness and compassion and it just so happens that these are the words that a number of successful coaches have been emphasising.

One of the must have books on the shelf of every forward thinking football manager is not about football but basketball ball! Sacred Hoops by Phil Jackson - of the Chicago bulls and LA Lakers - emphasises mindfulness and compassion alongside adaptability as the winning formula. A formula applicable beyond sport to business.
The significance here is not how ideas from sport can crossover to business but how the concept of leadership is changing in all types of organisations. Mindfulness would have been dismissed in the past as some sort of dippy hippy idea associated with Californian start ups. And yet it has proven very effective in helping individuals deal with pressure, reducing stress, maintaining their focus despite the increased demands and becoming more comfortable working with uncertainty and ambiguity.
Compassion is not traditionally thought of as part of a strong leaders approach to the workforce. However increasingly compassion is seen not as being soft or naive about human behaviour but as part of a flexible approach which treats employees as individuals and is a much more effective way of improving engagement and buy in to the organisations culture, essential for an agile and responsive organisation.
2026 will be full of uncertainties for leaders but those who adopt mindfulness and a compassionate leadership style will be better equipped to deal with uncertainty and ambiguity.
