Not Brave Performance

Good. Not brave.

Most teams aren’t failing.

They’re behaving.

They hit targets. Attend meetings. Contribute constructively. Raise concerns carefully. Deliver what’s asked.

It all looks fine.

That’s the problem.

Because high performance isn’t about doing what’s asked. It’s about pushing beyond it. Challenging it. Occasionally breaking it.

That requires risk. Friction. Discomfort.

Most organisations don’t reward that. They say they do. They don’t.

They reward reliability. Consistency. Not making life difficult.

So teams learn.

Don’t push too hard. Don’t challenge too far. Don’t win the argument and lose the relationship.

Over time, something drains away.

Ambition.

Not personal ambition. Organisational ambition.

The sense that we might do something exceptional, not just acceptable.

What’s left is a team that works.

But never surprises.

And we pretend not to notice.
