Published in December 2018, the Index outlines the UK’s productivity in local authority areas and cities. The UK is in a long-term productivity slump with disparities in productivity between regions and inter-regional disparity. The index found diverse levels of productivity and there is considerable opportunity to increase economic performance by increasing productivity in underperforming areas. Technology, connectivity, infrastructure, education and innovation were highlighted as important factors in improving productivity across the UK.

Out of 10 core cities, 5 are in the North (Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle Upon Tyne). The Index states that all core cities were found to be below their industrial benchmark. The North East and Wales also scored below their industrial benchmark. However, the North West has a cluster of strength, predominately focused in Cheshire, Knowsley, and the Ribble Valley authority - ranking 20th in the Index. Thus, highlighting inter-regional disparities which can be found across the UK.
