Published in March 2019, the Report explores productivity – measuring Greater Manchester (GM)’s historical performance and assessing current productivity by sector and local authority. GM has specialisms within manufacturing, health and scientific research, digital, and creative industries. The Report identifies that skills, human capital, innovation, connectivity, research and development investment, trade, and the availability of high value work are important factors in explaining differing productivity and performance. The Report continues to state that health is also an important factor: working people experiencing short term poor health in the North of England are 39% more likely to lose their job when compared to the rest of England. The Report also finds that there is no clear relationship between productivity and company size or age, and that a key characteristic of more productive companies within GM is trading and exporting on an international scale.
