Published in November 2020, this report from the Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) provides an in-depth analysis of the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on the North, in relation to its impact across the rest of the UK. By commissioning four of the NHSA’s university members (Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and York), the report allows us to examine the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on health and productivity in the Northern Powerhouse and to explore the opportunities for ‘levelling up’ regional health and productivity. NHSA estimate that an extra 12.4 more people per 100,000 died in the Northern Powerhouse than the rest of England due to Covid-19, and an extra 57.7 more people per 100,000 died in the Northern Powerhouse than the rest of England due to all causes. These extra 57.7 deaths per 100,000 could cost the UK economy an additional £6.86 billion in lost productivity, measured by GVA.
