From Threads to Tapestry: Data Improvement Strengthens FNP

At a recent book reading, the writer shared their experience of learning to weave in South America. They spoke of the patience required to thread strands across a loom, the discipline to maintain tension, and the creativity needed to bring a pattern to life. At first, the threads dangled chaotically, colours clashed, and nothing seemed to make sense. But slowly, with care and persistence, a strong and meaningful fabric emerged — every thread finding its place.

Improving data is much the same. What may appear to be jumbled, and complex strands of information can be woven together into a coherent picture — one that supports better decisions, stronger outcomes, and lasting impact.

The FNP Data Journey - from paper and beyond

In the early years, data collection in FNP was on paper forms with manual entry into local spreadsheets or basic database systems. Reporting was limited, focusing mainly on uptake, and lacked the detail needed for timely decision-making. Quality assurance required significant manual effort, and trends were often invisible.

Building Digital Foundations

Improvement came with the introduction of MiDIS (Multi-Disciplinary Information System), hosted within NHS Tayside, which offered a centralised data entry and storage function. Alongside the developing local innovations — from advanced use of Excel to bespoke clinical systems —errors reduced and accessibility to the data improved. Standardised templates brought consistency, making it easier to aggregate data for local reporting and supporting the beginnings of national reporting. This early digital foundation laid the groundwork for a more ambitious transformation.

Turas FNP: A Step-Change

This transformation came in 2019 when Turas FNP was launched, a system designed specifically for the programme which sits within the broader Turas platform developed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES). It provides:

  • A single, secure platform for all FNP sites across Scotland.
  • Real-time data access, enabling direct user input and improved ownership.
  • Standardised reports for continuous quality improvement and fidelity checks.

Turas FNP ensures consistency, accuracy, and timeliness of data collection. It supports programme delivery, annual reporting requirements and service expansion.  With structured, standardised data, FNP teams can now systematically review selected fidelity measures, benchmark against national figures and identify trends.

Weaving the Threads Together

Data improvement is not just a technical upgrade; it is a core component to maintaining the data which drives the evidence-based practice within FNP. As Ada Lovelace once said, “The Analytical Engine weaves patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.”

At the centre of Scotland’s FNP programme lies not just a national data system, but the people who make it work.  For FNP, the loom is Turas FNP, the threads are data, the Family Nurses and Supervisors alongside their clients, the skilled and patient weavers. The Data Managers could be described as the guardians of the loom, ensuring that every strand of information is complete, accurate, and meaningful. From guiding new nurses through Turas FNP and local systems, to preparing reports and analysing trends, they are the ones who help to transform raw numbers into insights that drive better outcomes, ensuring that every visit, every report, and every data improvement contributes to the wider tapestry of Scotland’s FNP service.

Lessons Learned: Weaving Stronger Data

Improving data isn’t just about technology — it’s about people, processes, and trust. Over the years, FNP has learned that:

  • Stakeholder engagement is critical — data systems only work if people use them.
  • Training must evolve with technology — support is as important as the system itself.
  • Data governance builds trust — security and compliance are non-negotiable.

In weaving, every thread counts. Missing data leaves gaps, outdated data weakens the fabric, but clean, structured data strengthens the whole fabric.

Imagine client outcomes as a tapestry woven from threads of care, opportunity, and resilience. Each thread represents a moment, a decision, a relationship. With better data:

  • We align the threads to place support where it’s needed most.
  • We see the full picture, revealing risks and progress that were once hidden.
  • We weave with insight, tailoring interventions to empower clients.
  • We value every thread, ensuring life experiences are reflected in the weave.
  • We refine loose strands, ensuring timely quality improvements strengthen client outcomes.

The result is a fabric which is stronger with every strand and brighter with every insight.

Looking ahead

Data improvement is continuous; reviewing what is captured to how it is collected can transform its impact and use within the FNP programme. The ways in which it is used and reported on locally and nationally also needs consideration as these do not always run in parallel.

Just as the weaver patiently thread strands across a loom, FNP’s data journey has been about bringing structure to complexity. Each data improvement — from local innovations to national systems — is a thread that strengthens the whole tapestry, and with every strand, Scotland’s FNP service is weaving a future where data is central to supporting healthier families, brighter outcomes, and lasting resilience.

Improved data improves outcomes — and improved outcomes change lives

What an inspiring read! The weaving metaphor is such a vibrant way to show how FNP’s data journey has grown from scattered threads into a strong, meaningful tapestry. I love how you highlight the people behind the system — turning data into real insight and impact.

It’s amazing to see how far things have come, from paper forms to Turas FNP, and how each improvement strengthens outcomes for families across Scotland. A brilliant, hopeful reminder that every strand of data truly makes a difference.

Fantastic piece!
