A book published by Marc Peters in 2020 on machine learning is very good at explaining basic principles on machine learning (algorithms, modelling, fitting models to data etc.). Chapters 1 and 8 are an especially helpful introduction with the rest of the book covering the core foundational mathematics  (A free pdf download).
