Published in March 2019, the report summarises the evidence base on the causes of homelessness in the UK. Causes of homelessness are split into structural (including private sector tenancies and an insufficient supply of affordable homes) and individual factors (including poor health and substance abuse). Combinations of factors can lead to homelessness and these are not ranked the same across research implying causes may be different across individuals, geography and time. There has also been a shift from emphasising individual to structural factors. Eviction was the most commonly reported reason for causing rough sleeping. The primary trigger for causing single homelessness is relationship breakdown and family homelessness is most commonly related to housing market pressure and affordability.
