Tackling the climate crisis will require the combined efforts of national and local government, local communities, private companies and individuals. Although local authorities face constrained budgets and powers, they are also well placed to pioneer new approaches that connect different policy areas, including spatial planning, transport, housing, energy, and parks and green space. Speakers at the Institute of Government and Public Policy Conference, 'Driving Local Authority Environmental Change and Improvement' on 9th June 2022 identified many of these opportunities in a series of thought provoking workshops that are summarised here.
