A new Rail Industry Association report written by Oxford Economics revealed how reducing travel times by train would significntly boost job creation across the UK. Just a 10% reduction in travel times could bring up to 22,900 new jobs to the North of England alone.  It also included findings on the significant current value of the railways to the UK, which generates £42.9 billion of growth value added each year and 710,000 jobs. The report also highlights that whilst travelling by rail is already the greenest option for most journeys, emissions will fall even further on electrified routes to 14 times less than conventionally fuelled trains, highlighting the value of further investment both in encouraging mode shift to rail and decarbonising the railways.
