Your Local Area Needs You – ELREC launched promotion of diversity in community council.
Edinburgh & Lothians Regional Equality Council (ELREC) has been working on Diversity in Public Life project since last year, aiming to increase participation of the BME community in Public life and in the Democratic Process. The project is funded by the Scottish Government to work with the diverse communities around Edinburgh and the Lothians. Under this project, a special scheme, Public Life Champion (PLC) has been launched to provide advice, training and mentoring to the interested BME individual who lives/works across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
In forthcoming, Community Council’s Triennial Election in Sept-Oct 2016, the project aims to encourage more BME people to get involved in Community council by raising awareness, creating a network with various CCs and provide useful information (i.e.: Nomination/registration process) and practical advice for those who wish to stand as a community councillor.
We have hosted an event in partnership with Granton and District Community Council on 11th August 2016 at Royston Wardieburn Community Centre. It shows a greater interest from BME community to get involved in the community council. Please find the brief event report here.
ELREC is currently seeking support from the Lothian wide community council to work in collaboration in relation to promoting diversity at the next election and beyond. We would like to request all community councils to circulate information about our project and provisions of support among the BME members lived within their community council areas.
The next Community Council registration and nomination process will commence on 5th September 2016 and last until 26th September. Support and advice information is available at ELREC for the period stated, for anyone who wishes to stand as a Community Councillor from BME community.
