Consultation: Voluntary and community sector spending data

The current 'Recommended Code of Practice on Transparency for Local Government' published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (http://www.communities.gov.uk/localgovernment/transparency) recommends that local authorities publish grants to the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCS), amongst other datasets.

Following the development of a practitioner's guide to publishing local spending data, the Local Government Association (LGA) has worked with councils and the voluntary sector to extend the guidance to include information on VCS expenditure.

This consultation seeks views on the LGA proposal for guidance to publish VCS spending data in a way that

  • promotes local accountability and to demonstrate to residents and the VCS how local councils spend their money
  • is consistent and comparable between authorities
  • proposes a practical solution to publishing the data that is cost-effective and does not create a new and unnecessary burden on councils

I welcome your views on how to publish VCS spending. Please send your responses to transparency@local.gov.uk by 14 December 2012.
