A Cheerleader Leader
Perhaps it’s because referring to a cheerleader brings to mind a picture of attractive young women chanting slogans and performing acrobatic dance routines at an American football match that dismissing some one as a, “ glorified cheerleader” is to diminish their leadership skills. But that is not what is meant by the phrase cheerleader leader. A cheerleader leader is the type of leader who fosters a positive environment, recognises strengths, values the contribution of individuals, provides helpful feedback, inspires and motivates. Much as cheerleaders encourage, support and motivate their team .
To be clear I am not referring to the captain of a cheerleading team I am referring to a type of corporate leadership style that focuses on the so called softer leadership skills of empathy, support and encouragement, a compassionate leadership style rather than the very different pragmatic, ruthless , macho management style favoured by authoritarian leaders.
Far from being a put down being described as a cheerleader leader is to recognise someone’s ability to inspire and empower others, to improve their confidence in the own ability whilst helping them grow and develop. It is to creat a safe, healthy work place which is supportive, with an emphasis on colleagues helping each other out , cooperation rather than competition. A workplace that doesn’t tolerate bullying or harassment. A workplace that operates on praise not blame. And as such a place where people feel valued and empowered and therefore approach their managers with solutions rather than problems.
Being a cheerleader leader doesn’t mean some one is naive about human nature, is reluctant to challenge or avoids difficult conversation. It does not mean they are weak on strategy or lack vision. And it doesn’t mean they are irresponsible with the budget or unconcerned with the bottom line. It just means they are know for injecting energy, possessing infectious enthusiasm, providing an endless supply of positive support and sustaining a never give up attitude.
