In 2014, we published a summary of key learning from four detailed evaluation reports which explored the experience of delivering FNP in the first Scottish test site in Edinburgh within NHS Lothian to a first cohort of clients over the period January 2010 to April 2013. These reports explored each phase of the programme from pregnancy to toddlerhood from the perspective of clients and family nurses.

The key objective of this study was to establish:

• Whether the programme is being implemented as intended
• How the programme operates in Scotland (Lothian), looking in particular at:

• How nurses, clients and wider services respond to the programme
• What factors support or inhibit the delivery of the programme
• Implications for future practice

• The plausibility of FNP to impact on short, medium and long-term outcomes, in particular, outcomes of relevance to Scotland.

The evaluation demonstrated that it was possible to implement FNP with fidelity in a Scottish context. The study provided evidence that the programme may achieve its intended long term outcomes; and many of the mechanisms within the programme's theory of change appeared to be working as intended. The study also highlighted a number of implementation issues, that were to be taken into account in the planning and delivery of future sites, which improved the success of the programme.
