What will be the typical career paths of ITPMs (IT Project managers) in 2014?

Those in the Higher Education (HE) with more business-oriented computing graduate programmes have  noticed that an increasing number of graduates are now taking PM roles within one or two years of graduation. Previously the teaching of practical PM was often seen as premature at undergraduate level, as graduates in industry would only take on PM roles after several years, and for many in HE the acquisition of technical (i.e. coding) skills was seen as more pressing. The challenge for HE is to ensure any changes in the nature of PM are recognised in our teaching.

There has been a growth of Masters level courses in project management which frequently recruit practising project managers as part-time students  These often,  not unreasonably, want the university courses to support PM standards and competency frameworks (such as PRINCE 2). However, many HE staff are uneasy with the often conflicting objectives between post graduate study and prescriptive industrial training.

The workshop is designed for HE lecturers involved in teaching PM at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Higher Education. However, potential employers, development and learning specialists and non-public sector training providers may find something of interest. There  will speakers from CapGemini, PA Consulting and Capita ( who through AXELOS have taken over the development of PRINCE2),  but the focus will be on discussion and debate by HE staff. The objective is to make sure that the voice of HE is heard, and a summary of findings will be published.
