This powerful one-day event will provide delegates with an in-depth understanding of the latest policy and Government initiatives and will share learning. It will explore the strategic role of health and wellbeing boards, the issues affecting children and young people and the political issues surrounding tobacco control.

The conference will be delivered through a series of interactive speaker sessions and workshops.

Tackling tobacco use in children, young people and adults is one of the most challenging tasks local authorities face as they prepare to take on their public health responsibilities in April 2013. There are approximately 10 million adult smokers in the UK and around 150,000 regular smokers aged 11-15. Smoking is the primary cause of preventable illness and premature death, it is a major cause of health inequalities and has the biggest impact on the most disadvantaged social groups. Every year over 80,000 people die in the UK from smoking-related illnesses, this costs the NHS an estimated £2.7 billion a year.

The case for reducing smoking among the population is clear. Local government has a clear and important role to play; working with its partners it has the opportunity to promote and implement effective tobacco control plans and reduce health inequalities in communities.
