Historic flood risk management (FRM) techniques have caused widespread damage to river and coastal hydromorpholoy.The Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the restoration of such historic damage and the avoidance of further degradation, integrating FRM objectives with other aspects of river basin planning. Balancing these objectives can be challenging but rewarding, with potential to offer widespread sustainability benefits and unlock multiple funding streams.
