Improving the Experience of LGBT Service Users of Mental Health Services

Overall this learning session will enable staff who come in to contact with service users be more aware of the issues facing those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). The session will highlight key issues of inequality faced by LGBT people and the impact this has on mental health, what sources of support are available to support recovery and the legal and professional framework which underpins inclusive practice within mental health services. Learners will explore inclusive best practice for LGBT service users of mental health services

By the end of the session, staff will be able to:
1. List key LGBT terms and challenge LGBT stereotypes
2. State the health inequalities and compounded issues faced by LGBT service users
3. Describe the legal and professional framework for working positively with LGBT service users
4. Outline importance of collecting data on sexual orientation and gender identity
5. Reflect on your own professional practice in relation to working with LGBT service users
6. Describe a range of signposting and other support available for LGBT service users

Sources of information and specialist services for service users and carers to support inclusive recovery – to be given as a handout with London LGBT contacts for health, wellbeing, hate crime, domestic abuse, substance misuse, housing, faith and belief, disability, housing, with sections for local community groups relevant to each trust area where the training is being delivered.
