Project Management is about getting things done through people. Stakeholder management helps you understand what people involved with a project want and how to engage them to help you achieve project success.

At this event we will define what stakeholder management is and explore the reasons why it is so important for project managers. Tools and techniques for identifying, categorising and prioritising stakeholders will be shared. We will also outline the basics behind a communication plan and explain the link between stakeholder engagement, risk management and benefits realisation.

There are many reasons for projects failing to achieve their stated goals, but one of the main ones is widely acknowledged to be a lack of effective engagement with stakeholders. Efforts to improve stakeholder engagement have tended to skirt around the issue. Pleas to ‘communicate more’ and tactics for addressing particular situations don’t seem to have made a difference.

Project managers depend on people to support, contribute, lead, solve problems, deliver stuff, and not throw spanners in the works. Yet current practice often positions stakeholder management alongside other priorities, something ‘extra’ to be done rather than an integral part of planning, managing, controlling and delivering a project. The Speaker’s involvement with the stakeholder engagement focus group will be explained and an opportunity to join the group will be extended to everyone present.
