A three-year project requiring the capture of high-resolution aerial imagery and 3D LiDAR data for the British rail network

Focus will be given to the challenges faced by Akrim from Atkins in the capacity of a Project Manager in dealing with a diverse range of stakeholders on the National Aerial Survey Project delivered by Atkins for Network Rail.

Akrim will highlight personal insights into what helped him successfully complete a three year National Aerial Survey project on time, under budget and with no service disruption.

Aerial data is used by Network Rail as part of its Digital Twin initiative to support planning upgrades, asset management, maintenance access planning, vegetation management and post incident investigation. The project will help Network Rail reduce service impact, predict maintenance requirements and improve trackside safety by minimising the need for lineside visits.

Akrim worked with a variety of stakeholders including suppliers sub-contractors, various Network Rail Teams, data users and the Intelligent Infrastructure Programme to manage the helicopter based capture of high resolution photographic imagery and high definition 3D data for the entire 17,000 km of the UK Rail network.

Atkins has also been involved in supporting the delivery of innovative tools turning the aerial data into valuable railway insight, including global award winning Track and Vegetation Management tools. The project has won the Digital Technology Excellence Award, Rail Business Awards 2020, and Global Asset Management Innovation Award, IAM, 2019 and has been a finalist in several other award nominations.
