Professor of Psychiatry | University of Manchester

& Director of the National Confidential Inquiry Into Suicide and Safety in Mental Health

& Lead for the National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England

Every year in England there are over 5000 deaths by suicide

and around 200,000 people attend hospital after non-fatal self-harm.

During the pandemic there have been countless claims of rising rates.

The Government has just announced its intention to review its national strategy for suicide prevention.

In this free seminar talk Professor Appleby will discuss those most at risk and whether suicide can be prevented. He will then reflect on how Covid-19 has affected suicide and self-harm statistics.

Finally, Professor Appleby will consider what should be covered in a revised national strategy.
