When we launched IDeA Communities of Practice, now known as Knowledge Hub (KHub) in 2006, the digital landscape looked vastly different. The concept of widespread online collaboration in the public sector was, for many, a theory yet to be tested. 

Today, as we stand on the threshold of our 20th anniversary, we aren’t just celebrating a technical milestone. We are celebrating you. The real history of these two decades isn't stored in our databases or reflected in standard user statistics; it lives in the personal journeys of every person who has logged on, asked a question during a crisis, shared a hard-won resource, or nurtured a thriving community from scratch.

To mark this incredible achievement, we are launching "20 Stories for 20 Years," a curated digital collection designed to capture the real, human impact that Knowledge Hub communities have had on UK public services. However, this project is missing one critical component: your story.

Why Your Story Matters

As public service professionals, we often rely on metrics. We track financial savings, calculate time efficiencies, and measure key performance indicators. This data is essential, but it only tells part of the story. Numbers cannot capture the feeling of relief when you find that missing piece of information in a discussion thread, nor do they fully articulate the dedication of a facilitator who builds a space for peers to grow.

Stories are powerful. They make abstract concepts concrete and transform complex data into relatable, human terms. By sharing your experience, you make the case for knowledge sharing in public services stronger than any standard report ever could.

Two Ways to Contribute

"20 Stories for 20 Years" is a curated editorial project that weaves together two distinct, yet complementary, perspectives on our community:

Part One: "How Groups Are Built"

We want to hear from our Group Facilitators. Focusing on the reflective journey of community management. The challenges, the breakthrough moments, and the long-term achievements of building a shared space. We want to know what it takes to steward a thriving group and how you sustained it over years or decades.

Part Two: "How Groups Change Things"

This is dedicated to Group Members. We are looking for "before and after" accounts of moments where a single KHub interaction led to real-world change. Whether it was a saved cost, an avoided mistake, or an improved service delivery, we want to hear how a post, a document, or a connection made here helped you solve a problem you could not have navigated alone.

How to Get Involved (Without the Stress)

We know that as public sector professionals, your time is at a premium. We have designed the storytelling process to be as straightforward, supportive, and safe as possible:

• Guided Forms, Not Blank Pages: We are not asking for a polished case study from scratch. We have developed guided forms for both facilitators and members that take approximately 30–45 minutes to complete. These forms are designed with prompts to help you structure your narrative arc from the challenge you faced to the outcome you achieved.
• Editorial Support: Once you submit your responses, our dedicated editorial team will shape them into a high-quality, 600–900 word story. You do not need to do the heavy lifting of drafting.
• Complete Control: Nothing is published without your express written sign-off. We will send the drafted case study back to you for review, allowing you to ensure it accurately reflects your experience and adheres to your organisation’s policies. You retain full authority over the final piece.
