The Responsible Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) team in OCDO has published a new Data and AI Ethics Framework. It reflects the latest thinking on ethical data and AI use and supports wider work across government, including the AI Opportunities Action Plan and the Blueprint for Modern Digital Government.

The new framework provides clear, actionable guidance for public sector teams working with data and AI. It simplifies complex ethical considerations into practical actions for real-world data projects and is designed to work alongside existing tools like the Model for Responsible Innovation and AI Playbook.

The framework was updated using feedback from over 100 users across government, gathered through surveys, workshops, and interviews. It features several key updates, including:
•    expanded scope to cover AI and algorithmic technologies, and updated content on working with data
•    expanded ethical principles to cover privacy, environmental sustainability, societal impact and safety, in addition to fairness, accountability and transparency
•    a new self-assessment tool that teams can use alongside the framework to help identify risks and impacts in their data and AI projects

The framework is for people who design, build or maintain public sector projects that use data or AI.
