Local Authorities recognise that the data they collect and hold is one of their most valuable assets. Used intelligently, it can help them make better decisions, drive service improvements and better serve their residents. However, they are acutely aware of the need to use data not just legally but also ethically, transparently and in a way that is worthy of their residents’ trust.  The London Office of Technology and Innovation (LOTI) has been working during 2021 with the London Borough of Brent to research how the council has created and deployed a data governance ethics board to oversee a consistent and trustworthy process for data ethics appropriate for use in the council and (in time) wider rollout in other London Boroughs and (perhaps) the wider local government sector.
