I was reflecting on experiences of various meetings last week, and it struck me that they quite neatly fall into categories I’ve used in the past to assess why organisations don’t follow good practice or improve.  These were cases, all to do with community engagement, where I could clearly see that something was wrong – sometimes it was my fault and sometimes down to other people. ... I was struck by a blog I read recently asking, ‘Am I not a people?’ The (very interesting) blog was asking whether civil servants can substitute themselves for ‘real people’ in the policy making process.  The answer was, no.  Though of course they are ‘real’, with “family, a kitchen to clean, bills to pay, hopes and dreams of my own”, the civil servant (or other person... Everyone agrees it makes sense for public bodies to co-ordinate their community engagement.  So why don’t they (usually)?   I managed to get our Health and Wellbeing Board to agree a protocol, last week, committing the Council, CCGs, Healthwatch and the voluntary and community sector to co-operate in their community engagement work.
