That is a simplified version of the government’s attempt to take back power from doctors. It has parallels with local government. How do you get the balance right between the professionals, the managers and the politicians. Should the professionals run the service because they know best or should managers because resources are scarce and budgets finite or politicians/ councillors... Gweld mwy

The government wants you back. A lot was invested in your training. You gained valuable experience which we could really use now. We have developed a great programme for supporting returnees like yourself. We understand why you left, there were a lot of unpopular changes,  we were experimenting with changing the skill mix, long hours and a cap on pay rises didn't help. The emphases on... Gweld mwy

It's an often claimed truism that it is a matter of indifference to the public who empties their bins,  as long as the service is good. Members may be ideologically enthusiastic about outsourcing or committed to retaining/returning services in-house but it is the duty of officers to ensure any radical change is supported by a strong business case.    I was a senior manager... Leaders always make it personal, "I am committed to this", "I believe we can do it", "I believe we can make this work" , some say do it for me ,some say do it because it is the right... Gweld mwy

Under the banner of " all managers to be leaders" a management development programme was commissioned around executive coaching, mentoring and management learning sets. What was unique about this was that it was systematic, it was to involve all managers ( and latterly people who aspired to be managers) it was deliver throughout  in partnership with two management consultants over... Most whistleblowers on bad practise and abuse are not board members or senior managers they are front line staff reporting concerns about colleagues having failed to get their line manager to take the matter seriously. But what happens when a higher up does listen? From my experience if the whistleblower wants management to take action they have to be prepared to make a signed statement and... Gweld mwy

It is assumed that you acquire political awareness and sensitivity on your way up the career ladder and if you don't then you don't move up. Managers are all too often left to learn by their mistakes. Unfortunately in a political environment  those mistakes may mean that members lose confidence in them making the manager considerably less effective.   Despite... Gweld mwy
