“ There is no failure in business. There’s good days, bad days; some days you are able to be successful ,some days you are not. Some days it’s your turn, some days it’s not. That’s what business is  about.” The quote is from  Giannis Antetokounmpo he actually said it about sport not business. He was answering his critics in a media conference following the surprise defeat of his team... Gweld mwy

I was once carpeted by my boss for a piece I had written in a local journal published by and on behalf of the voluntary and not for profit sector. The leader had had a word with him. Apparently I should have made it clear that I was writing in a personal capacity and not as a spokes person for the local authority. The boss was at pains to state that the leader did not necessarily... Gweld mwy

Across the country whilst services have been reduced and management posts cut chief executives and council leaders have been increasing and enhancing the role of communication staff. For a number of years there has been a belief amongst council leaders that their councils are misunderstood, the challenges they face are not fully appreciated, that they are unfavourably portrayed in the... In books, films ,TV soaps and dramas there are inspirational teachers. Sure there are bad teachers and lazy teachers, well meaning but ineffective teachers but there are also passionate, dedicated and inspirational teachers. Social work also has passionate, dedicated and inspirational professionals, just not on tv. Nurses on tv are skilful, caring, professionals who get to know their patients... Gweld mwy

I am a big fan of crime fiction and one of my favourite authors is Peter Robinson and his detective DCI Banks. Many of the books have been successfully televised and no doubt his latest "When the music is over " will also be turned into a two part thriller, if so I hope the tv producers rewrite the social workers cameo role from the inaccurate, poorly researched, stereotype, into...   My favourite opening sentence this week comes from the Guardian. " Sharon D Clarke studied to be a social worker before becoming a doctor..... on Holby City." At first I thought this was going to be an interesting angle on the integrating health and social care debate. How training as a social worker has made me a better doctor. But no. Sharon is an actor and Holby City is a tv hospital... Gweld mwy

The CQC has come in for more criticism recently a chief executive thinks they were unduly harsh in placing his trust in special measures having judged two areas of service failing yet recognised excellent work in many other areas of the trust. A journalist writes an article on nursing homes inspected and deemed to be performing well only for staff to be prosecuted for abuse! Doctors... Gweld mwy

The DWP has admitted making up quotes by benefit  claimants. So what we've all don it. The difference is they got caught because their quotes we so unbelievable. The DWP leaflet not only included fake quotes but fake pictures,of fake people, telling fake stories. They were caught out when a journalist asked to interview the Sarah and Sac in the photos about their stories. Faking... Gweld mwy

The president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, David Pearson, spoke on various BBC news programmes last week, to discuss the crisis in the NHS. On the BBC’s Breakfast show last Thursday, the GP interviewed before Pearson had used the opportunity to get a simple message across that the government had failed to train and retain enough GPs. As a result, surgeries could... Gweld mwy

If you listen to senior managers particularly in organisations where things have gone badly wrong it's not difficult to see why they might be unreliable witnesses.   I want to put the record straight. The politicians and the journalists have past judgment, my former colleagues have distanced themselves and even those I trusted most have spoken out against me.    ... Gweld mwy

There was a "fowl" smell in the air last week. It was caused by the slaughter of chickens, only it wasn't. It was the rotten stink of hypocrisy and prejudice masquerading as the people's right to know. The halal hysteria wasn't anything to do with animal welfare or food labelling. It was a media created moral panic and as such it told us much about the state of diversity in modern... Gweld mwy
