Advertisements on traffic islands

Advertisements on traffic islands

We have several traffic islands in our district where advertisers display small advertisements, size and location agreed by the Highway Authority, and this pays for the maintenance of the planting. This can lead to complaints/enquiries being received in Development Control about whether Advert Consent is required. We have advised that Advert Consent is required as such adverts do not fall in any class in Schedule 3 of the Regs, however acknowledge that they are displayed with the consent of the owner and raise no issues in terms of highway safety or amenity. This approach is now the subject of a complaint - does anyone have any experience of anything similar and how have you dealt with it? Thanks!

Re: Advertisements on traffic islands

We have had a corporate scheme for adverts on roundabouts applied for and granted en bloc. The corporate partners were not keen to apply but were eventually convinced that Ad Consent was needed.

Re: Advertisements on traffic islands

We have advertising on roundabouts here in Bournemouth. We took the view that Advertisement Consent was required and our Leisure Department submitted the application and were granted consent on a temporary basis which has been renewed several times since.

Re: Advertisements on traffic islands

You should also be aware that even if consent is given for the adverts, the traffic island is now generating an income and may become rateable

Did you request an application for each traffic island or one application to cover several, we are of the opinion that an application would be required for each. Cheers
