Soakaways

Can anyone point me at a design standard which might be relevant to a domestic grey water soakaway? Also, I think that I read somewhere that there is something like a Soakaway Registration Agency .... is this an urban myth, or does such a thing exist? Many thanks.

Re: Soakaways

Interesting concept... grey water soakaway. First question is what is the grey water from? If its baths and showers, washing machines, or sinks there is a legal requirement in the building regulations to have it treated. Grey water is usually stored for use in flushing toilets where potable water is not essential. If it’s from toilets it’s a whole other ball game and shouldn’t be called grey water. Waste water (grey or shall we say brown) should go to a sewer, a septic tank or other form of treatment. If it is a simple system with little risk of pollution it could be a reed bed, but more likely include a digester tank. I am aware that the environment agency requires a licence for effluent discharge in many cases. I suggest you contact them about this. Have a chat with Building Control and EH as well as we don’t need a health hazard. Phill
