In the public sector vacant posts are not just a result of poor pay and overwork but of poor treatment of staff due to institutional apathy towards staff subject to bullying, racism and misogyny. And a perceived lack of support from HR. Recent reports about the NHS, the London Met police force and the London Fire and Rescue service have highlighted a disturbing and persistent culture of... Looking at the video and film clips, film makers in the USA think bullying at school, in the work place and in leisure venues is common place. They also believe all bullies get their comeuppance. But only by picking on the wrong person who violently and with maximum efficiency breaks bones and busts heads using fists and feet. The message seems to be learn to fight.  Does the message... You may have already come across this but for the half of the population not familiar with male public  toilets there are urinals with a difference in some locations. These urinals have a life size,  very realist house fly painted on the porcelain, dead centre. The thinking  is that this improves the users aim as they feel compelled to treat it as a target. This seems... Voir plus

The image is of someone frantically bailing out a leaky boat whilst water continues to pore in through the holes in its hull. There is a lot of effort but it doesn’t  make much difference. This is what it is like trying to make the organisation more diverse by putting a lot of effort into recruitment whilst ignoring Inclusion.    The reason why diversity is championed as good for ... If your organisation has or aspires to a diverse workforce your managers should be able to demonstrate cultural competence yet most managers would feel I’ll prepared to pass a Cultural Competence test. Of even greater concern is  the number of organisations claiming to be striving for Equality and Inclusion and yet when appointing managers they do not stipulate in the Person... Voir plus

In Star Trek when the Enterprise first encounters the Borg they announce themselves with the now infamous phrase   “  We are the Borg,  resistance is futile , you will be assimilated.”   Is your organisation like the Borg seeking out people from different cultures and backgrounds to add their knowledge and skills to benefit the company  but expecting them to give up their... An inclusive recruitment process is all well and good but the benefits will quickly be lost if the organisation can’t retain these same employees. An inclusive recruitment process is useless if  not part of an inclusive culture . An inclusive culture is a lot harder to achieve than an inclusive recruitment process.    So you attracted all that diverse talent now what? All too often... Voir plus

It started harmlessly enough just a casual observation to a colleague about some clients names that got turned into a list, circulated and added to. The list was titled Funny Names. As the Funny Names list became more widely circulated there were growing concerns from some employees that the names were predominantly of Asian and non Anglo Saxon origin. This sparked a  fierce internal... Voir plus

It’s trending. It’s on t.v. It’s about the life’s and loves of the aristocracy in Regency England. So what’s it got to do with diversity and inclusion in your organisation?  Bridgerton a Netflix costume drama reimagines Regency England as a place where black people existed as equals with whites. And that’s a game change.    Netflix has a Vice President of inclusion responsible the ... Voir plus

We need to talk about how we talk about Black Lives Matter (BLM) in the work place because the subject still has a faint air of menace about it. If people are reluctant to talk about diversity for fear of saying the wrong thing then organisations will have a tick box approach to diversity which looks impressive but doesn't  change the culture. This all to common superficial approach... Voir plus

If aliens from a distant and previously unknown planet landed seeking asylum and only to be allowed to integrate into society, HR would have no problem adapting equality and diversity policies to include Little Green Men. After all colour, race and sexuality are already covered.  From HR to all staff In view of recent “new arrivals” there maybe a need for some minor tweaks to... Voir plus

According to a survey  conducted by the Confederation of British Industry work place diversity is a high priority for young people aged between 17 and 23. You have heard of the glass ceiling but are you aware of the cliff edge ? The glass ceiling is that invisible barrier to promotion. The expression was originally coined to explain why women found it so difficult to progress to senior management post but could equally be used to explain the absence of women and men from minority ethnic groups. The cliff edge is where a woman or some... Voir plus

On holiday in New York, first night go for a drink in the hotel bar with my son in law. The bar is crowed, we eventually catch the attention of the bartender and I order two drinks where apron the bartender asks my son in law how old he is. My son in law is rather surprised by the question he is in his late thirties. His polite reply is greeted by a terse, “ You don’t look it” and... Voir plus

During the hot summer months the lesser hairy white ape heads for the coast. Shedding their outer clothes apes can be found in large groups on sandy beaches. In recent years observers have noted apes have appeared in very large numbers along the Spanish coast. Can a leader take a group of misfits and make them into a strong, effective unit, a sort of "Dirty Dozen" only not by focusing their aggression but channelling their independence of thought. More like the characters in The Big Bang Theory. It was advertised as a new service for organisations who wanted to address the under representation of minorities.    http://www.theguardian.com/society/commentisfree/2016/feb/17/rent-a-minority-one-stop-solution-to-create-the-illusion-of-diversity-at-your-company Voir plus

MI5 have them. They are helping the secret services get the best out of their "Spooks". It was one of the reasons they were awarded public sector employers of the year. Soon every CEO, head teacher and senior manager will want one. They are the RDMs ( Reverse Diversity Mentors). Reverse mentoring in diversity is where a senior person seeks out some one to mentor them on diversity issues as a... Voir plus
