Austerity set Local Authorities a very big challenge how to get smaller without too much pain?    You can shrink people as in the film Downsizing , this solution turned out to have its problems your money goes further but if your income is reduced then low pay, poor housing, inadequate health care and discrimination remain.  You can shrink resources as in the Monty Python...   We didn't need all those staff after all   Call it efficiency, call it outsourcing, call it a purge but it turns out you don't need all those managers. If you outsource HR, IT and Admin then you outsource their managers. Likewise if you close half your libraries and most of your sports centres you dispense with the need for their managers. null Interim managers have they had their day?

The imperitive for restructuring, downsizing or merging be it local councils or NHS Trusts looked like a boost for the careers of interim managers. After all if you are thinking of doing away with the post of Chief Executive then a temporary appointment may buy you the time you need, alternatively the type of leader you need to break up the old structure is not necessarily the person best...
