I have a long standing suspicion of numbers when they are used to prove something. I think it started with Led Zeppelin. They were a rock group who refused to sell out by releasing a single when the hight of success was supposed to be a number one single and an appearance on Top of the Pops (TOTPs).   Statistics  may never lie, though everyone knows they can be economical with the truth. Everyone being managers and members. LA leaders and chief executives struggle to persuade the local media and a sceptical public that the authority should not be judged solely on it league position.   Using a football analogy helps explain how things may not be as simple as the league table would... Last year Liverpool were the best in Europe. Judged another way Manchester were the best in England. But if you take into account the amount they spent to achieve this performance then it looks like Sheffield is going to be the best this year. I’m talking football teams but I could be talking Local Authorities.  League tables are a fact of life in local government but that doesn’t... Voir plus

  This could be the story of an local government professional, a librarian, a housing officer, a policy officer ,a finance officer, a personnel officer or an admin officer.   Tim trained as a social worker in the 80s. He went on marches in support of the miners. You wouldn't catch Tim selling the Socialist Worker in town on a Saturday. He wasn't that type of radical social... Voir plus

The public sector aims to be more business like. Business is finance driven. The numbers don't lie. The numbers tell their own story. Fiddling the figures, everyone does it. It's ok as long as it not illegal. It's ok as long as you don't get caught. Getting caught is an occupational hazard. Success is measurable. What gets measured gets done. Targets motivate.
