Understanding and assessing instability - Public forum - Planning Advisory Service (PAS)

The NPPF at paras 170 and 178 refer to instability. 

Does anyone assess instability of land? If so how? What is your basis for understanding if a site could be unstable? What do you require an applicant to do if land could be unstable? What evidence? Do you map things that could affect instability? If so, what are they?
