Hands off management

The grilling of the BBC’s Director General by MP’s over his lack of curiosity may bring about the end of Hands Off management at a senior level. For years senior managers have been told their role is strategic and that they should not sweat the detail.

Ensure the budget cuts will be delivered, keep a close eye on the key performance indicators and paint a picture of how the organisation/services will look when the changes are delivered but let your managers get on with it.

As public sector organisations cut management posts and extend spans of responsibility you can’t know as much detail as once you could, you are increasingly reliant on your managers to tell you what you need to know.

They say an effective senior manager is one who knows what questions to ask. So the charge of lacking curiosity is a serious one. Expect a lot more questions.
