Sock Puppet

This is an interesting and humorous article which offers some insights into how people behave in the work place. If you have read any of my articles in the professional press or my excellent books on management you won't be surprised that I am so highly regarded in the business world.

Sounds a bit arrogant, you might think you are that good but you would never say it. Well you could get someone else to say it for you or to be absolutely sure the right things were said you could write it yourself but use another name, a made up one, a pseudonym. On the Internet this is called a ' sock puppet' it's your hand that is doing the manipulation but no one can see it. Apparently this is more widespread than was realised, just another way of promoting sales by giving your own work a glowing review. Some go further and give a hostile review to the competition.

Does this only happen in the in the publishing world? The idea of promoting yourself and undermining the competition is what is generally understood by the expression ' office politics'. Isn't that how we explain why some dullards are promoted and more capable colleagues constantly over looked? Does it explain the winners and losers in the recent management restructuring? Isn't it one of those dark management arts which like Alex Ferguson's mind games you totally disapprove of but have a sneaky appreciation of whilst hoping that they get their just deserts.
