Have you ever wondered why they do it? Despite their claims of noble motives the impression was that ordinary life was just too hum drum compared to the buzz and adrenaline rush of the fight. This was the commentators view on those who had left these shores to fight Isis. But the way these fighters talked was no different to the video messages sent by those they were fighting! It was all about being part of something big, doing something important, dangerous and exciting.

This might go some way to explaining the motivation of chief executives in the NHS or senior managers in local government. The average tenure of an NHS chief executive is 18 months on a par with premier league football club managers! Senior management in local government is all about imposing cuts to services, declaring staff redundant, making unpopular decisions like closing libraries and old people's homes. Despite their claims of noble motives the impression is their passion is for the challenge not the cause, in fact they pride them selves on being equally committed whatever the ideology. It's the challenge of delivering in difficult circumstances, it's the excitement of making change happen, it's the thrill of being part of something big, doing something important, it's risky but it's a real buzz.
