When I was very young, pre school,  I had a best friend who lived across the narrow alleyway behind our house. Every day at some point but usually after breakfast and lunch I would ask my mum to open the gate in the wall at the end of the yard so I could play with Sussie. One day my mum sat me down and in a rather serious voice told me we were moving to a new house, it would be... See more

Why this obsession with superheroes are ordinary heroes no longer up to the job?  Well what chance us mere managers.  How many superheroes can you list? It used to be that there was Superman and Spider Man plus possibly Batman, although technically he didn’t have any super powers. Now due to the popularity of the Avengers and X -men films it’s not just the comic book nerds who can ... See more

Post pandemic and the Great Resignation people are even more likely to turn down the opportunity of a management/senior management post because of inadequate resources , unrealistic targets and relentless pressure.  I asked someone I managed if they had thought about applying for a management vacancy that was currently being advertised. No they said. I asked why not since they had... See more

Shouting ,swearing, ridiculing and “losing  it big time” not as a one off or isolated experience but as a daily occurrence, a regular feature of the way the manager behaves would be unacceptable and considered bullying in most organisations.  But how hard can you push someone to deliver, how high can you set your expectations and how critical can you be before it is considered bullying?... You know all those articles which tell you the importance of learning to say “No”. How liberating it is, how you suddenly regain control of your life and establish a work life balance. Well what if you’re the person they suddenly start saying no to? As a manager I don’t want people to say no. My job after all is to get people to do what needs to be done Do you remember when... A racist can spot another racist although neither would identify themselves as such. A black person knows a racist even a cleaver one who is careful about what they say and who they say it to. Their problem is convincing the rest of us/ the organisation that this articulate , intelligent professional is doing all they can to block, undermine and sow the seeds of resentment against black... If your organisation has a turnover problem look no further than your managers and supervisors.  A report by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman of the Gallup Organisation claims that the single most likely reason for good staff leaving an organisation is their immediate line manager or supervisor. Strategies to retain good staff have involved golden handcuffs, loyalty bonuses, additional... See more

The budget setting process starts earlier since austerity became the norm. As the summer comes to an end budget holders have already submitted their proposals based on best case scenario, most likely scenario or worst case scenario. And most are resigned to it being worst case again.   The austerity climate in the public sector has made serial cutters of us all. Where once we... See more

The rise of the member led authority There has been a dramatic change in local government and I am not talking about budget cuts, management culls or outsourcing services. Where once councils were officer led now the politicians are very much in charge. Of course we always maintained there was a clear distinction between the leader of the council who managed the majority party and the chief... See more

Beware the metaphor. Leaders open conferences, give keynote speeches and write blogs to explain and inspire. They like to use metaphors to freshen up what they say.But an over extended metaphor or an ill chosen one can confuse rather than clarify, give out an unintended message and even expose mangers to ridicule. http://www.publicservice.co.uk/feature_story.asp?id=21877   See more

You can’t be an effective leader if you don’t have the trust of your peers and the public. That is according to chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners writing in the Health Service Journal (HSJ). I suppose that depends on what you mean by effective. But if you mean get things done well many chief executives are not trusted by their staff or sections of the public but... See more

I was at a senior manager’s question and answer session at the end of a two day staff equality and diversity awareness course. I didn’t see it coming but I know the sound of a bear trap snapping when I hear one. These apparently naive questions from front line staff are never hypothetical. Someone in the room had a colleague who wore black eyeliner to work. The issue had come up during the... See more
