Getting rid of a blame culture , a bullying culture, a culture of distrust and cynicism, a sexist culture, a racist culture, a risk adverse culture, a paternalistic culture and replacing it with a learning culture, an empowering culture, an inclusive , creative culture , a can do culture, inevitably involves changing the way managers manage their employees.
Most leaders would like...

007 returns, shaken not stirred, updated but still the cool under
pressure, man of action leading a life style normally associated with
the rich and famous, living it up in top hotels and exotic locations
way beyond his pay grade as a civil servant. It’s fun which is
probably why Bond doesn’t complain that after 50 years in post he has
still not been promoted! Mind you his record of...

null Stress and Burn out
Looking back it’s clear I didn’t cope well with stress. I didn’t
even recognised I was stressed. I don’t know to what I attributed the
frequent headaches so sever I came home from work and went straight
to bed, or the development of a pronounced stutter, something I had
not experienced before or since. When I changed job the headaches and
stutter went away. But I still ended up...

We spent an enormous amount of time thrashing out a common understanding of the type of management behaviour we wanted to model and the type of manager the organisation wanted/ needed. What we identified was that the organisation was rather confused about the type of managers it wanted claiming to want leaders with good people skills who could inspire staff and who were innovators and...

The muddling through model of management has a more negative sound than its popularity would indicate. It's proponents tend to refer to this way of managing as common sense, pragmatic management or the "lets not get carried away here and keep it simple", alternatively the approach is described as a quick fix. The method is to respond to all problems without any deep thought or to use the...

The receptionist came out from behind the desk, spoke to and then stroked each one in turn. She clearly likes dogs. Not surprising you might say being as she works at a vets. Not so, we have been going to our vets for years and they are far more professional, they never smile, keep conversation to a minimum and never ever come out from behind the counter. Clearly the receptionist at the first...

Are we as one? Do managers speak as one? Do staff behave as one? Do we all know what we are doing? In other words how strong is the corporate culture? This is a question that gets asked in organisations when things are going wrong. The policies were clear so how come they weren’t followed? We have spent millions on staff development so how come some people can’t do what’s expected of...

null Going for Gold
There will be those who try to persuade us that the success of Team GB can be emulated in the workplace. I will not be one of them. see article in the Guardian.

Did you know that one of the reasons we were awarded the Olympic Games was our emphases on celebrating diversity? Adecco the recruitment sponsor for London 2112 has just completed a survey of employers’ views on diversity. Overwhelmingly companies reported that having a workforce that reflected the communities they served was a real advantage and good for business. However when asked about...
