I have a long standing suspicion of numbers when they are used to prove something. I think it started with Led Zeppelin. They were a rock group who refused to sell out by releasing a single when the hight of success was supposed to be a number one single and an appearance on Top of the Pops (TOTPs). Of course I watched TOTPs but only to rubbish acts and ask ,” who on earth is buying that... See more

“ Throwing money at the problem won’t solve it.” Margaret Thatcher.  NASA disproved that theory in putting a man on the moon. “ Spend alone doesn’t explain differences in performance between LA’s.” Audit Commission. No but poverty, low income , and health inequalities does present a bigger challenge for some LA’s.  It’s not about the money is a dangerous slogan. Of course you can ... See more

In football they call it the difficult third year. Despite your success in the first two years you get the sack in the third year. It’s as if everyone had given all they had and now you can’t get any more from them. You weren’t able  to build on your success.  I have heard the same speech from a team manager to their front line staff and from a chief executive to there senior... See more

Leaders give permission to say the wrong thing, open out as opposed to close down discussion and are prepared to manage the emotions stirred up. Leaders put the same emphasise on values as budgets and performance (and are prepared to be challenged where these appear to be in conflict for example staffing levels and budget cuts). Leaders creat opportunities for direct face to face... See more

We spent an enormous amount of time thrashing out a common understanding of the type of management behaviour we wanted to model and the type of manager the organisation wanted/ needed. What we identified was that the organisation was rather confused about the type of managers it wanted claiming to want leaders with good people skills who could inspire staff and who were innovators and... The struggle to stay true to your professional and personal values. The compromises that undermine your integrity. The fixation on budgets and performance  The gradual desensitisation The loss of faith in human kind due to chairing too many abuse investigations. The realisation that you have become so good at faking passion even you can't tell. The loss of street credibility Being... See more

Man marking like many management expressions originates from sport. To man mark is to follow    your designated opponent around the field of play, wherever they go you follow never letting them out of your reach. Man marking is the practise of employers closely scrutinising the work of an employee. It is different to the close supervision and support a manager gives a new... See more

The officer was making a presentation on the performance in the third quarter. The chair interrupter with a series of rhetorical questions which highlighted an area where performance had dipped. The officer attempted to explain the figures only to be rebuffed with “the numbers can’t hear you”. Which turned out to be the signal that the meeting was over? The message was clear we’re...
