Who killed JFK, did the Americans really land on the Moon, what is the government covering up about Area 13, and what aren’t the board telling us? As with all conspiracy theories the idea that there is a secret plan is actually comforting, it‘s more reassuring to think our leaders are intelligent and competent , even if devious, than to accept we inhabit a world of randomness and...   The undead walk amongst us. At first only when it got dark  but now day and night. Initially in remote locations now in shopping malls, and city centres. Once the undead shuffled slowly so could easily be out run but not any more. Their decaying bodies and general lack of hygiene make them very unattractive. Their totally lack of personality make them completely uninteresting.... Voir plus

Social work has changed a lot but have social workers? The articles in the social work press reflect  the changing world of social work, new policies, new legislation, new guidance, new structures, new way of working, new technology, fewer resources, yet the on line comments by social workers reflect attitudes and beliefs that social workers from an era before social media,...   I worked in an open plan office alongside my boss who was a lay preacher and pulled me up for swearing. As a senior manager I was not in the habit of colouring my language with swear words but I was sometimes very stressed and venting through expressing a few swear words out loud did make me feel better. I was not swearing at any one just in frustration and annoyance at the situation,... Voir plus

I am a big fan of crime fiction and one of my favourite authors is Peter Robinson and his detective DCI Banks. Many of the books have been successfully televised and no doubt his latest "When the music is over " will also be turned into a two part thriller, if so I hope the tv producers rewrite the social workers cameo role from the inaccurate, poorly researched, stereotype, into...   Machines, intelligent machines are ideal for space exploration, they don't need oxygen, water or food and they don't age. The last is important as the distances in space travel are unimaginably long and will take what would be many life spans of humans. In view of the time scales perhaps the most important difference is machines don't get board or drunk!  Once a machine learns to... Voir plus

If you want to get on don't rock the boat. Don't contradict your manager. Best avoid topics of race , faith and sexuality so as not to risk saying the wrong thing. Don't go out of your way to upset your workmates by telling tales to management. This is the unofficial culture of every organisation I have ever worked in.    This unofficial culture explains why whistleblowers... Voir plus

Success in business is often based on failure. So say the successful. Would you expect to get the post you were applying for if you sent in a CV that listed all your failures, the posts you applied for but didn't get, the times you were overlooked for promotion, the exams you failed, the courses you didn't get on, the unflattering annual appraisal from the boss you didn't get on with,...   Leaders give permission to say the wrong thing, open out as opposed to close down discussion and are prepared to manage the emotions stirred up. Leaders put the same emphasise on values as budgets and performance (and are prepared to be challenged where these appear to be in conflict for example staffing levels and budget cuts). Leaders creat opportunities for direct face to face... Voir plus

The aim was to change the management culture and the way things are done has certainly changed. It was not however the cultural change programme with its emphasis on management development that has resulted in new thinking and new ways of working. Executive coaching, management mentoring and leaning sets didn't change relationships or shift priorities. Investing in corporate communications,... Voir plus

We need to talk about how we talk about diversity in the work place because the subject still has a faint air of menace about it. If people are reluctant to talk about diversity for fear of saying the wrong thing then organisations will have a tick box approach to diversity which looks impressive but doesn't  change the culture. This all to common superficial approach to diversity... Voir plus

It was a spoof and like the best spoofs it was just ridiculous  enough to be believable. It was advertised as a new service for organisations who wanted to address the under representation of minorities.    http://www.theguardian.com/society/commentisfree/2016/feb/17/rent-a-minority-one-stop-solution-to-create-the-illusion-of-diversity-at-your-company Voir plus

The conference like the song claims we can all be heroes. The promotional material speaks of the battles that have taken place and the battles to come, battles that have left many managers feeling bruised, demoralised and overstretched. The rallying cry is heroic leadership is not an optional extra. Which like the Bowie single is a bit of a surprise because that idea has... You can't push a wheelchair across the sand but a blue badge is very useful in getting parked at busy sea side resorts. There has been a lot of comment on social media about the second TV. series of highly praised True Detective. Five episodes in and it couldn't be more confusing. With several back stories to untangle, a complicated plot and difficulty in working out which characters are important let alone who are the baddies. It reminded me of far too many inter departmental and multiagency meetings. What on... Voir plus

There is a constant threat of decline, accompanied by a pervasive mourning and sense of wrongness in the world. There are kings and king makers, trial by combat, scheming and betrayal and a delicious habit of bumping of the biggest stars. This is not some medieval fantasy or an episode of Game of Thrones this is the modern day public sector in a time of prolonged austerity. Temporary... Voir plus

The central character is Thomas Cromwell who is undergoing a modern day rehabilitation of his reputation. The president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, David Pearson, spoke on various BBC news programmes last week, to discuss the crisis in the NHS. On the BBC’s Breakfast show last Thursday, the GP interviewed before Pearson had used the opportunity to get a simple message across that the government had failed to train and retain enough GPs. As a result, surgeries could... Voir plus
