Highways can deal with incidents

My route to work enjoys the use of some of the busiest roads in the Country and small problems can soon add to congestion. On Wednesday there was an unusually long queue within a roundabout and miles of stationary traffic in the opposite direction.

This was the result of a diesel spill on a critical part of the roundabout on a dual-carriageway A road. Traffic had to be diverted down a single lane A road to the M25 or other routes.

We acted quickly, responding to the incident then informing road users via our twitter feed @herts_highways, VMS located around the County and messages for our website. Some positive feedback came in, some road users were annoyed that they had a longer journey.

We updated progress via twitter and the road was opened in the small hours of the morning. Some things we don't do well in local government, but this is an example of something we do well.
