Mental Health Intelligence Network: Key profiling tool updates

The suite of National Mental Health, Dementia and Neurology Intelligence Network (NMHIN) profiling tools has been developed to support an intelligence driven approach to understanding and meeting need. They collate and analyse a wide range of publically available data on prevalence, risk, prevention, early intervention, assessment, treatment, outcomes and service costs. They provide commissioners, service providers, clinicians, services users and their families with the means to benchmark their area against similar populations and gain intelligence about what works.

Severe Mental Health (SMI) Profiling Tool

The SMI profiling tool is going through a period of change as the key data set transitions from the Mental Health Minimum Dataset (MHMDS) to the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Dataset (MHLDDS) to the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS), reporting from which is due to begin April 2016. The profiling tool has now been updated for MHLDDS data, community services data, and prescribing data up to Q2 2015/16, and the metric on people in BME groups in contact with mental health services has been updated for 2013/14 and 2014/15.

It has also been updated to include 21 NHS Benchmarking Network metrics within the Services, and Quality & Outcomes domains, which means the tool now provides more detailed information by Mental Health Trust. The SMI profiling tool can be found here.

Common Mental Health Disorders (CMHD) Profiling Tool

As a result of significant revisions to the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) dataset, the CMHD profiling tool is now able to provide a far greater level of detail on IAPT services than before. The profiling tool includes two new domains: ‘outcomes by problem descriptor’ (diagnosis), and ‘availability of therapy type’.  These new domains provide an additional level of detail on those referred, entering treatment, and completing treatment by broad diagnosis group and increased detail on therapy type.

In addition, new IAPT indicators for waiting time and number of treatment sessions have been added and updated for Q1 2015/16, all existing IAPT and GP prescribing indicators have been updated for Q1 2015/16, and three risk factor and four wellbeing prevalence indicators have been updated at local authority level for 2014/15. The CMHD profiling tool can be found here.

Suicide Prevention Profiling Tool

The profiling tool has been refreshed to include; updated data on years of life lost for 2012-2014, age and sex specific crude rates for 2010-2014, three new metrics on admissions due to alcohol and two new metrics on social isolation. In the future we plan to include new metrics on mode of suicide, place of occurrence, and occupation of those completing suicide. The suicide prevention profile demonstration video can be accessed via the profiling tool homepage. The Suicide profiling tool can be found here.

Children’s and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Profiling Tool

The profiling tool has undergone some routine indicator updates in March. In the ‘health’ domain the following metrics have been updated to 2014/15: child admissions for mental health, young people hospital admissions due to substance misuse, child hospital admissions for unintentional and deliberate injuries and young people hospital admissions for intentional and deliberate injuries. In the ‘risk’ domain the family homelessness metric has been updated to 2014/15.
