Applicant 'visiting' objectors

Applicant 'visiting' objectors

We have a case where a retrospective application has been made and is due to go to Planning Committee. There were a number of objectors who raised concerns with the Parish Council and one who wrote in independently. Its a small village application. The applicant has now 'visited' the objector who wrote the letter and seems to be intimidating them. The objectors are in poor health and elderly. Should this be reported anywhere?

RE: Applicant 'visiting' objectors

Hi Linda,

If you suspect intimidation then a criminal offence may have been committed and should be reported to the police without delay. You should also raise it with your community safety or crime prevention teams and possibly adult social care if there are elderly and possibly vulnerable people at risk, and find out and follow your council's safeguarding protocols.

I would also have thought you wouldn't want to take the application to committee until such time as these issues had been resolved, and in the meantime to seek legal guidance on whether such behaviour has any implication either on the outcome of an application or how it should be processed.

Thanks Rob, the application is due to go to Committee on the 20th - it feels to me as if the applicant is trying to deter people speaking at Committee
