What are the building regulations for conservatories?

I have had a look on the other forum topics but have not found an answer to my question. My partner and I have decided to rather than move from our house we are going to try and build our own conservatory (we will try anyway). I have been told by a good friend that we may not need planning permission but that it must meet certain regulations. Has anyone got any idea just what the building regulations for conservatories actually are? Like I say I want to try and build it myself to save us money on builders costs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dave. Ring your Local Building Control Officer and ask them! The last thing you want to do is get some dodgy advice from a friend or a less than accurate website. Mike

I'd also recommend that you contact your local planning office as well to make sure you don't need planning permission - the last thing you want is a visit from your local enforcement officer!

Dave, before calling you might want to just familiarise yourself with the planning/building regs issues - the attached is a useful and simple to use guide that will hopefully help, although take Sue's advice and make sure you check with your local planning office as well! http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/
