As we reach the end of the second decade of the 20th Century, it seems a good time to look back at what has happened in that time in relation to happiness, resilience and wellbeing.   Unfortunately, I don’t have the knowledge, expertise or time to write a comprehensive review.  So here are a few thoughts, and maybe it’ll prompt others to add theirs, correct my mistakes and fill in the... 2016 is widely seen as being a terrible year, but how was it for health and wellbeing policy? I’ve been doing a weekly update of news items since 2012 but this is the first full year that it’s been on a database with a score of significance for each item.  Which means that, at the touch of a button, I can read off the top 10 news items. Except it’s not quite so straightforward.  For... Gweld mwy

I thought the Five Year Forward View (5YFV) had a lot of promise.  It identified the key issues: “we need to take our own health seriously, change the way services are provided, and yes ask the next government to support us financially”, source: press release) It also pinpointed the key things to focus on: prevention: tackling the root causes of ill health co-production: giving... Making meetings effective could be a life and death issue. Partnership working often requires joint delivery of something – whether a strategy, programme of action, event or whatever.  But producing something jointly is a challenge.  That’s one of the reasons why in organisations tasks are typically delegated – strip everything down to its component parts then use a hierarchical... Learning from each other is important – across local government, the rest of the public sector and beyond.  It’s how we improve.  Without it, the relationship between inputs and outputs remains the same and there are few opportunities to make savings apart from cutting services. Such learning can take place in various different ways, such as: •    Face to face vs... Gweld mwy

Clearly the referendum result is eclipsing everything else at the moment, but there has also been quite a lot of health and wellbeing policy news in the last two weeks, albeit rather less momentous.  A lot emerged from the conferences of the NHS Confederation, BMA and Royal College of Nursing but that was mostly motions rather than anything which would necessarily lead to action. There is a... I was struck last week by how two different meetings failed to be as effective as they might have been, and how it was simple, and well-known advice that could have improved them. Both suffered from many of the classic problems with meetings.  People turned up late (including both the chairs).  The meetings weren’t managed well.  Despite both chairs being very nice people and...
